“somewhere between the weeds is an invitation to a pocket of safety and love; to sit amongst friends and be fed; to engage in vulnerability and compassion; a chance to recharge before we march onto the next revolution. This is an invitation for you to come eat and drink with us amongst the weeds. You always have a place at our table. Or in this case, our picnic blanket.

This show is inspired both by the importance of building community and by queer joy as a form of militancy - to the warmth felt when sitting in the sun amongst queer family. Feeding the community is important to its survival. Feeding one another is a form of intimacy. It is an act of love and keeps us strong and alive, nourishes us. When we break bread together, we strengthen our ties to each other. Being able to feed each other is something the government is scared of, it takes away some of their control of us. Look at the way they shut down events to feed the homeless. Look at how they murdered the Black Panthers, whose food programs were one of the pillars of their organization.

Many plants we consider weeds and many bugs we consider pests are actually deeply important parts of our environment. Weeds nourish and strengthen the soil, they provide homes for the bugs. Many weeds actually have long traditional medicine values. The bugs have infinite roles and also feed the birds. And so on, and so on. Much like we should reject the colonial view of a “clean” cut yard of plain grass, we must reject our current society and its strict rules. Queers are necessary and important to this world - we too can grow and nourish it. It’s time for a Revolution.

But first, come sit. Bring a picnic blanket and some food. Laugh, cry, be angry, be nurtured - eat, drink. Join us somewhere between the weeds."
